Hi, my name is Mary Jane!
Toby’s story of abuse mirrors my own. I was left at a shelter with a broken leg by teenage boys when I was just four or five weeks old. Fortunately for me, the veterinarians there saw what a great dog I could become. After surgery, I was fostered by a loving couple who cared for me for six weeks. And after that my forever parents picked me up at the shelter with instructions to take it easy for about four more weeks. My paws were so soft and my muscles hadn’t developed much, but boy was I cute!
I’m now two-and-a-half-years-old and can run superfast! I’m obsessed with the Frisbee, enjoy sleeping in late and will happily pee outside for a treat. I can sit, shake and sit pretty. And speaking of pretty, my mom brought home some borrowed costumes from her friends at Foothills Animal Shelter for me to try on.
I’m still very uncomfortable around men, which I think mirrors my feelings about these costumes. I told mom that the brown spots on my back are so pretty and shouldn’t be covered by a costume.
But after that didn’t go over so well, I told her that I cannot walk with clothes on me… she didn’t buy that either.
So, instead I just ran away from her, using the couch to fend her off. She caught me three times.
Chicken Costume. Not happy with this big beak on my head.
Pink Tutu. Looks ridiculous.
Pink Elephant. I refused to stand up… so she just draped the costume over me. My mom couldn’t even get a picture!
Oh well. I’m sure mom will find a costume I like for Toby’s Pet Parade & Fair! I hope you can join me on Saturday, September 16 in Downtown Golden from 8:30 am to 1 pm. We will be raising money for the thousands of homeless animals cared for by Foothills Animal Shelter. Can’t wait!
See you all there!
